"My great great grandfather, Henry Hunter Sharp, was a soldier in the Mexican War in 1846 - 1847.  He and his brother, John Sharp, at the time, resided in Macoupin county near Scottville.  Both served in the 1st Illinois regiment, Company “G”.  The 1st Illinois regiment was under the command of Col. John Hardin from Jacksonville, Illinois.  Company “G” was under the command of Capt. John Wyatt, who was from Franklin, Illinois.  John Wyatt & Co. “G” survived the battle of Buena Vista, returning home in 1847.  Col. Hardin was killed in this fierce battle. Henry H. Sharp and brother John Sharp enlisted at Franklin, Illinois, mustered in at Alton in June of 1846.  Both were mustered out at Camargo, Mexico in 1847 & returned to Macoupin county.  Eventually moved & settled in Christian county, Illinois (1864)."
