Larry Pfeiffer, Regional Superintendent, Macoupin County
Schools, that his office has files of rural schools after 1915 and prior
to that date, the records were kept in the individual schools and would
probably be located in one of the nine school districts currently in place
today in Macoupin County. *Addresses for schools located at the bottom
of this page.
Check with his office for available records and times his office is open.
(or closed for some unknown reason). 217/854-4016. 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
His office and the nine school disricts welcomes persons looking for information of these past schools, teachers, students, researchers, etc, who are interested in such data. They welcome personal visits or requests by mail and will make every attempt to comply with all requests in a timely manner.
Specific dates of operation for individual rural schools
are not available. Requests will have to be made and the respective office
will conduct a search and forward a reply of their findings.

Proves Age By Book Won At Spelling Match
State Register Special Service
Carlinville, Ill., March 13. -- Green Adcock, 79, of North Otter township
appeared before the old age pension board Thursday and made application
for a pension and in order to establish his age he produced a child story
book, which he won in 1867. The inscription in the book read, "Presented
to Master Green Adcock for his excellency in spelling, July 11, 1867, by
his teacher Nannie Stewart." Miss Stewart was the teacher of district
17, then in North Otter township. Mr Adcock further related how the seats
in the school were made; they being made of slabs taken from logs and were
put together with pegs. The book he produced was 69 years of age and was
in excellent condition. In the book was a paper ten cent piece of money
issued in 1854. Each day Mr. Mansfield states, someone brings various objects
to the office to assist in establishing their age.

Can
you pass an 1895 8th grade final examination? A copy is located at the
Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, KS, site?
In 1914, Macoupin County 8th graders went to the courthouse to take the
8th grade examination which I would think was similar to this exam.
